I have had a few clients recently who are including connecting into their chakras as part of our work together as they heal from trauma, make sense of their life and move back to their pathway, so I thought I might do a little post to talk about Chakras. There may be some of you that don't know much about them, and others that may not have known we can weave them into our sessions.
Introduction: A Journey combining Chakras, Yoga and Counselling
Purpose of the post: to share insights about each chakra’s significance and recommend yoga poses and mantras that help balance them
And to explore how including our Chakras may impact our counselling sessions
Exploring Chakras: Bridging Ancient Wisdom with Modern Holistic Practices

In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of chakras and their integral role in our health and wellbeing. More individuals are beginning to explore the ancient concepts of energy centres within the body, recognising how these chakras can influence not only physical health but also emotional and spiritual balance. This shift in perception has led to a surge in practices such as yoga, meditation, and holistic therapies that aim to align and harmonise these energy centres.
Chakras are rooted in ancient Indian spiritual traditions, primarily within the practices of Hinduism and Buddhism. The concept of chakras can be traced back to the Vedic texts, which date back to around 1500 BCE, where they were described as energy centers within the body. The word "chakra" itself comes from the Sanskrit term meaning "wheel" or "disk," symbolising the spinning energy that flows through these centers. Over time, various schools of thought and spiritual practices have elaborated on the chakra system, integrating it into yoga, meditation, and holistic healing. The traditional belief holds that there are seven main chakras aligned along the spine, each associated with different aspects of physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being, ultimately contributing to the balance and harmony of an individual's life force energy.
Integrating chakras into your counselling journey
Somatic counselling is a therapeutic approach that emphasises the connection between the mind and body, recognising that emotional experiences can manifest physically. This form of therapy often incorporates the concept of chakras. By focusing on these energy centres, somatic counselling aims to help you release stored trauma and tension, promoting healing and self-awareness. Each chakra is associated with specific emotions and physical functions, allowing you to explore how imbalances in these areas may affect your overall well-being. Through techniques such as breathwork, movement, and mindfulness, somatic counselling encourages you to reconnect with your body and facilitate a deeper understanding of your emotional landscape.
The Foundation: What Are Chakras and Why They Matter?
Key Characteristics of Chakras
Energy Flow: Chakras are thought to facilitate the flow of vital energy, known as "prana" or "chi," throughout the body.
Locations: There are seven primary chakras, each located along the spine, starting from the base and extending to the crown of the head.
Color Association: Each chakra is often associated with a specific color, sound, and element, reflecting its unique characteristics and functions.
Balance and Health: It is believed that balanced chakras contribute to overall health and well-being, while blockages or imbalances can lead to physical or emotional issues.
Chakras, can play a role in our emotional, spiritual, and physical health by facilitating the flow of energy and maintaining balance. It is believed that each of the seven main chakras corresponds to specific aspects of our being, influencing our emotions, thoughts, and physical well-being. For instance, the heart chakra is linked to love and compassion, while the root chakra grounds us, providing stability and security. When these energy centers are aligned and functioning optimally, individuals often experience improved emotional resilience, a deeper spiritual connection, and enhanced physical vitality. Conversely, blockages or imbalances in the chakras can lead to emotional distress, spiritual disconnection, and various physical ailments, highlighting the interconnectedness of these aspects of health and the importance of chakra work in holistic wellness.
Working with chakras during yoga and/or counselling can support us in fostering a holistic approach to emotional and psychological well-being. Understanding the chakras can enhance the growth experienced in counselling sessions by fostering a deeper connection between the mind and body. By bringing awareness to the felt sense within the body, you can explore your emotions and experiences more holistically. This often presents in moments where you become aware of a feeling in your body which prompts us to explore the human experiences asociated with the chakra in that area - for instance you might say "as we spoke about that I feel a dark hard mass in my belly" which will guide us to see if we need to explore if there are things happening that are blocking emotions, or maybe feelings of stuckness. Each chakra corresponds to different aspects of life—past traumas, present challenges, and future aspirations—allowing you to identify and address areas of imbalance or blockage. This integration of bodily awareness into the therapeutic process encourages you to connect with your physical sensations, leading to greater insight and healing. As you engage with your chakras, you may find that your emotional and psychological experiences become clearer, facilitating a transformative journey toward self-discovery and personal growth.
